桑德堡的小诗《雾》是在意象派影响下创作的。诗人用猫的形象来表现雾,因为两者具有共性。诗人用具体的可感的猫来表现抽象的、飘渺的、虚空的、不可感知的雾。这样一来,虚感变成了实感,抽象变成了具体。雾既象征现代生活的瞬息万变,现代都市的神秘莫测,也象征西方社会的荒凉景象。我们也可认为,这首诗展现了人与自然、人与动物的矛盾。小诗《雾》充分体现了意象派的创作原则。诗人对所要表现的事物“雾”不加解释地、不加评论地予以直接陈述。诗的语言言简意赅,废除了无益于表现的词和修饰性词汇。同时,这首诗极富音乐性。
