摘要
奥尼尔的戏剧作品,可以放到两个不同的观察层面来看:一是其本土历史文化的整体观,二是跨文化的整体观。以《榆树下的欲望》为例,从其本土文化整体观可以看到北美殖民地文学精神传统基础之上的文化人格,从其跨文化整体观可以看到人类共性基础上不同文化传统(如中国文化与西方文化)差异之下的不同归宿。
O'Neill's drama can be studied in two different aspects, one is its native historical and cultural general perspective, the other the cross-culture perspective. Taking Desire Under The Elms as the example, we see from the former the cultural personalities that are rooted in North America colonial literature heritage, while from the latter we see different endings due to different cultural traditions ( e.g. Chinese culture/Western culture ), even if these traditions are based on human beings' common characters.
