Investigation into the Method of Marking Tones of Chinese Characters with Pentatonic Scales

“五声”(宫、商、角、徽、羽)是否曾经作为汉字字调的一种标示方法?它与“四声”字调标示法之间又有着怎样的关系?本文通过考证“五声”作为古代的一种数字序号曾被用于给汉字按照字调分类的事实,来证明早在沈约的四声说之前,汉字便拥有了“五声”字调标示法。并通过探讨“五声”字调标示法与音乐的联系,进一步揭示永明声律论的产生同音乐的关系。

Were pentatonic scales(宫、商、角、徽、羽) once used as a method to mark tones of Chinese characters? What relationship between it and the method with the four tones?
