华北平原中部存在着从新石器时代晚期到商周,乃至春秋时代的古代文化的空缺区,这一直是个未解之谜。从古文化空区的地理分布和地形地貌特征分析,造成这一古文化空缺区的原因可能不是黄河水患。近年来提出的全新世中期的陨石雨撞击灾害比较圆满地解释了古文化空缺区的形成。
