A Comparative Study of Politeness Principles in Chinese and Western Cultures

国外不少学者对礼貌问题均有研究和论述,然而,中西方不同文化背景下人们对于礼貌的看法虽有相同之处,但更多的是差异.针对两种不同文化背景下的礼貌原则,从六个方面进行对比并且分析了它们的异同,同时指出,礼貌是社会中存在的普遍现象,世界上各民族都有其独特的原则或准则.在它的方略、它所可能涵盖的准则及侧重点等方面,都会因文化不同而存在差异.若对六个方面的问题认识不足,就会使不同文化背景下人们的相互交往产生困难.

Politeness is a symbol of civilized human society. The paper first gives an outline and introduction of the issue of polite language studied by scholars at home and abroad, expounds politeness principles under different cultural backgrounds, and offers a brief explanation and comparative analysis of the politeness principle under different cultural backgrounds as in China and western cultures. In this paper, the author also points out that polite language is an essential part of language activities, every culture has its own unique features and principles. If we ignore their differences, it is impossible for us to make an effective communication.
