十九世纪中后期是中国步入国际社会的一个重要时期 ,也是中国由传统的朝贡外交体系逐步向近代外交体系转变的一个重要时期 ,薛福成的外交思想体现了这一转变。薛福成在其充当曾、李幕僚时的外交思想中就有维护国家主权和民族利益的立场、讲求交涉之道、以实力为外交后盾的外交思想 ,这已具有明显的近代外交思想成份。

The medium and later period in the 19th century is a very important period for China to come into interational society.It is the important transformative period for China from traditional diplomatic system to modem diplomatic system,too.Xue Fu-cheng's diplomatic thought reflects this change. When Xu Fu-Cheng was in Zen-Li's Mu Fu period. His diplomatic thought already embodies obvious modern diplomatic elements.These thought indudes defending state sovereignty and national benefits,paying attention to the diplomatic method and diplomatic theory basing on actual strength.
