The grotesque is one of the essential formal elements of Toni Morrison's 'poetic criticism.' The present paper discusses the double effects of the grotesque in Beloved and argues that Morrison establishes a dialectical tension between the negative mode(referring to horror) and the positive mode(referring to renewal)of the grotesque, not allowing her fiction to rest in either one. Furthermore, it assumes that these two modes make it possible for the grotesque to be connected with the sublime and beauty, and thereby a unique aesthetic style has been formed in this fiction.
