The end of the 20th century witnessed a rallying of critical interest in the study of travel literature, thanks to the emergence of Euro-American theories of deconstruction and post-colonial cultural studies. This article offers a reading of some contemporary Australian fictions about Asian travel. Focusing on the represented images of Asia in this body of literary writing, it argues that much of the contemporary Australian Asia writing constitutes no less than an extension of traditional Western orientalist discourse. It also contends that, while contemporary Australians talk increasingly more often about 'Asianization,' genuine Australian integration into the region would not materialize until the country overcomes its imperialist hostility towards Asia.
