Descriptions of clothing have permeated the writings of American realists such as Henry James, Kate Chopin, Edith Wharton and Theodore Dreiser. Attention to dress and the social backdrop in their works can illuminate a complex weave of cultural meanings. By unraveling the ways women ″identify″ themselves, we are actually trying to expose the warp of social class and gender expectations that have been largely associated with social conventions. With this in mind, the present author attempts to explore the social constructions of the female self in American realistic novels.
