A tentative Analysis of Timothy Richard's Views on Institutional Reform in Wan Guo Gong Bao

李提摩太是晚清时期来华的英国传教士,他在《万国公报》上发表了大量主张中国变法的文章,内容涉及农业、贸易、交通、文化教育等领域。这些文章在当时一部分先进的中国人中产生了积极的影响。但是,在其宣传中也明显表现出为英美等殖民者服务的特点。

Timothy Richard was one of the English missionaries and he came to China to conduct missionary work during the Late Qing Dynasty. He had published many articles in the newspaper Wan Guo Gong Bao propagating the ideas of the institutional reform in China, which was positive to China at that special time. He had certain influence in China and no other foreign missionaries could compare with him at that period. Nevertheless, in the course of spreading the thought of institutional reform, he clearly manifested his colonial character and his inclination of serving the colonial nations in essence.
