中古佛典对"寒地狱"名称的翻译多用音译,其得名源于梵文里表示疼痛、惊讶的拟声词,而这种拟声词与汉语相关的拟声词语音形式恰好对应。从汉语语音特点来看,汉语表示疼痛、痛惜、惊讶的拟声词可以分成三类;而且,随着语音的发展变化,汉语拟声词的文字形式也随之改变。
