断层的本质是断距,断距的本质是断层两盘沉积的厚度差,断层活动的前提是断面线出露地表。断层的发育史就是断距从无到有、逐渐长大的成长历史。沉积盆地的断层都具有同沉积性质,断面产状在断层发育过程中随岩块的翘倾而变化。向下消失的断层是地震资料陷阱所致。断层切割都是小断层切割大断层,由于断层切割而形成的地层假连续、地层隐重复、地层隐缺失应引起地质研究的高度重视。
