This paper reveals the ambivalence of Joseph Conrad's colonial discourse by analyzing two of his texts Heart of Darkness and Lord Jim . The paper points out that as a writer of the Britain Empire at its peak, Conrad is sober enough to disclose in his writings the hypocrisy, greed, and cruelty of the colonialists. At the same time, by examining Conrad's adoption of a special genre of fictionthe British adventure story and his imagery of 'the other', this paper also displays Conrad's defense, to some degree, of the western ideology that supports colonialism.
