摘要
蒲华1832年出生于浙江嘉兴,字作英,别号胥山野史、种竹道人。自小聪颖,擅写诗文。青年时代,他曾想通过制艺,开辟仕宦道路,因为他做的试卷常出格,不中考官之意,所以落得“复试四等”,得了个“诸生”。后多次举试,不断地被摒弃于门外,于是他绝意仕途,将功名富贵视作身外之物,转而致力于艺术,并当作一种求生存的方式。他32岁那年,能诗擅画的夫人缪晓花去世了,唯遗一女,使他悲痛万分,于是开始了他的寄旅生涯,过着鬻书卖画的鳏夫生活。他先客台州、宁波等地,50岁时曾游日本,其书画艺术为东瀛人上推重,回国后定居上海。在他孤寂的生活里,能给以最大安慰的。
