'Working all the year round'is an often-used description in traditional Chinese literature when the work and life of the peasants were referred to.Though a study of working days per year of the workers in major vocations in Songjiang of the early nineteenth century,the author has found that the majority of them worked around 300 days or more a year.But it is a new phenomenon which appeared in the Qing times.While their working days increased,the workers sought for more luxury goods,including those'drug food...
