李可染是20世纪最重要的画家之一,是中国现代绘画史上的一座丰碑。他与同时期的齐白石、黄宾虹、张大千等传统派绘画大师的不同点在于:他是学贯中西,大器晚成的书画家。他的早年接受过严格、正规的西画训练,同时又以毕生的精力投入到中国传统绘画的研究与实践,是一位将西画的技巧与中国画的美学思想完美地融合在一起的艺术宗师。无论在绘画理论,还是绘画实践及艺术水平方面,李可染都为中国画在新时代发展作出了杰出的贡献。他所提出的“以最大功力打进去,以最大勇气打出来”。
