佛母为诸佛菩萨之母,但这个“母”并不是指人,而是喻指佛菩萨的智慧。因为人世间母亲的功德最大,能生儿育女,繁衍后代,所以佛教拿她比喻智慧能生诸佛。如《大品般若经》卷十六载曰:“般若波罗蜜是诸佛母,……何以故,是般若波罗蜜出生诸佛。”可见,佛母像同密修本尊像一样也是密教思想高度拟人化的艺术形式。佛母的形象多为寂静形善相,而且都是女性形象。《造像量度经》规定其形象为:“其像作十六岁童女相”,“
