Colorful Folk Arts Add to PIP's Gaieties

The twelve photo exhibitions of Pingyao International Photography Festival were spread over both tourist spots and the residential homesteads of Pingyao. While viewing the superb photos of domestic and overseas photographers, our valued guests could get a sampling of such traditional cultures as money-exchange, architecture, religion, martial arts, as well as of the ethnic customs of the Han people living north of the Yangtze River. Our guests accomplished this by visiting old streets, ancient residences, olden shops and viewing antique architecture. During the festival, local customs demonstrations were given. Some of these include: "County Magistrate holds court" in County Yamen; "Choosing son-in-law by throwing an embroidery ball" above the City Tow er; "Religious rites performance" at Shuanglin Monastery; "Gentleman of the counting house writes home" in Sunrise Prosperity Bank; "County Magistrate holds a welcoming ceremony" under the North City Tower Gate; "County Magistrate pays respects" inside Temple to Town God; and "Lu Dongbin (one of the Eight Immortals of Taoism) flirts with White Peony, a pretty singsong girl" at Qingxuguan, a Taoist temple. These colorful demonstrations not only showed Pingyao’s cultural heritage, but they also supplied fresh brainstorming material to Chinese and foreign photographers alike. The commingling of the traditional and modern has fostered a pleasant atmosphere in Pingyao.
