１９世纪末到２０世纪２０年代，中国小说语言经历了一场历史性的大变革，极大地推动了中国小说的现代化进程，这场大变革在１９世纪末到五四前夕主要偏重于语言形式，努力为小说语言注入新的血液；到了五四时期，小说语言的变革具有革命的意义，不仅是白话文取代了文言文，而且．个人话语。

Great reform in the language of the Chinese novel took place between the end of the 19th century and the 20s of the 20th century. it promoted the modernization of the Chinese novel. This reform laid particular stress on the form of the language between the end of the 19th century and the May Fourth Movement. Not only the vernacular had replaced the classical Chinese in the writing of the novel, but the narrative mode also changed to encompass the private discourse, the enlightenment discourse and the political discourse.
