西方写实主义绘画在自文艺复兴之后的五百多年来,取得了巨大的成果,并且在西方形成了以写实为主导倾向的绘画传统,对世界美术影响巨大。但是自20世纪以后,传统的、写实的绘画受到了猛烈的冲击和挑战,特别是摄影术的出现影响了整个绘画界,现代主义艺术和后现代主义的艺术随后就出现在大众的视野之中。在新的形式下,研究西方写实主义绘画发展趋势就具有极其深远的意义。
