摘要
吧达维亚华人公馆的档案资料记载了19世纪中叶侨批局出现之前侨批业营运的情况,包括早期水客、经营方式、经营过程的信用保证、侨批纠纷的解决、经营过程中不可预见情况的处理等。在1787年到1846年这段时间里,水客作为一种行业,从事侨批递寄,制度上已经相当成熟。侨批局设立以后,水客在早期侨批业运营过程中建立的制度,诸如发展总分局的网络、收款后出具单据、兼营金融或者商贸业、利用汇水差价和商贸业获得利润等等,几乎都为批局所继承。
