中国古代官印制度发展到宋代，已十分成熟和完备。国家设置了专门的铸印机构──少府监和文思院，并且制定了诸如牌印制度、知印制度等严密的管理措施，在官印的形制上，背款的出现和叠篆的使用，为以后金元各代所沿袭，影响深远。
