Hong Ying has created three male images in her autobiographic novel The Hungary Daughters. Although she has been known as a feminist writer, Hong Ying breaks away from that label in the novel in the sense that the males are not endowed with their gender superiority, but presented as victims of misery as well. There is no protest discourse as a weapon to simplistically deny males, who are, in fact, presented as victims of misery and sorrow. The three males play indispensable roles in the growth of Liu Liu.
