In contrast to the writings replete with Oriental mysticism and exaggerated social defects, Dai Sijie presents to the West a world of intellectuals, where there is a China imaginary different from a China as imagined in the Western mentality. Frustrated in their cultural relocation, their imaginary is the result of escape and re-entry. Engagement in dialogues with other writers' works, and with his three other works, reflects a Western influence in style. His trans-temporal and trans-territorial spiritual communication is related to his articulation of his cultural identity.
