On the Comparison of English Idioms and Chinese Idioms

习语是人们从长期的生活实践和经典著作中提炼出来的语言的精华。习语使用恰当,可以使语言精炼、生动形象,达到言简意赅、锦上添花的效果。本文主要论述了英汉习语的定义、文化渊源及背景,表层结构及内涵,英汉成语的相互借用等问题。

Idioms,which are usually forceful,terse and vivid, have been described as the crystallization of language.They have been refined through long usage in practice and classic works.An appropriate use of idioms in our speech and writing will add to the strength and vividness of our language. This paper deals with such issues as the definition,the cultural background,the structure,the implied meaning and the assimilation of both Chinese and English idioms.
