An Analysis of Double Modal Constructions:Divergence of Modal Meanings by Reference to Sub iectivalisation

在部分英语方言中出现的某些双情态动词结构中,情态语义发生了分化,获得重新调配:第一情态动词主要承载"推测"意义,主现化程度更加深化;第二情态动词主要传达其他一些"非推测"意义.本文在对其结构特征和情态意义表达进行分析的基础上,结合语法化的运行机制以及与语法化动因密切联系的"主观化"概念,揭示双情态动词结构语法化倾向。

The emergence of double modal constructions in some varieties of the English language displays a divergence of modal meanings:the first modal within most frequently used constructions,if not all,is much more highly subjectivised to convey epistemic sense whilst the second mainly expresses non-epistemic sense.Based upon the analysis of their structural features and sense relationship,this paper combines the notions of grammaticalization with its two mechanisms at operation,and subjectival- ization,which is closely interrelated to the process of grammaticalisation,with a purpose to predict the grammaticalising tendency of double modal constructions in relevant English varieties.
