屈原思想复杂,本来就有多元倾向。汉以后对屈原的诠释大致上可以分为三个阶段:汉代为一阶段,这时有从道家角度诠释屈原的,也有从儒家角度诠释屈原的;六朝到唐为一阶段,这时儒文矛盾深刻,人们普遍把屈原当失意文人看待;宋以后儒学兴盛,屈原被逐渐儒化,朱熹认为屈原与儒家精神相通,把他与一般"词人"区别开来。后儒在朱氏的基础上对屈原不合儒家之处曲为辩解,使之进一步成为"圣人之徒"。
