A New Explanation of Emperor Ai Di's 'Abolishing the Institution of YUE FU'

两汉时期是乐府发展史上的旺盛期,但就在这个时期经历了一个断层,即西汉末年哀帝废除乐府,其中原因不甚明了。在此,就汉哀帝罢黜乐府的前后经过,特别是他作为一个末落的君主,面对当时政治腐朽、文化思潮激烈冲突的情形下,通过他对待音乐的态度,说明其废除乐府的思想根源及其历史地位。

It was a booming period in the development history of YUE FU in the Han Dynasty. But there was a sudden stop because of Emperor Ai Di's abolition of the Institution of YUE FU at the end of the Western Han Dynasty. As people don't quite understand why Emperor Ai Di abolished YUE FU, the paper tries to show Emperor Ai Di's reasons of abolishing the Institution of YUE FU, his position in the history through the comparison of different stages before and after Emperor Ai Di's abolition of it, and, in particular, his attitudes to music as a declining emperor in the Western Han Dynasty when he faced the circumstances of political corruption and fierce conflicts in the cultural trends of thoughts at that time.
