Speech act theory places emphasis on 'Saying something is doing something' and the social & communicative functions of language. It has cast a new light on the comprehension and explanation of the nature of language in our language teaching and the development of language competence. The paper, on the basis of the discussion of speech act theory, offers a case study and analyses its significance and applications to our language teaching.
