Ancient Roman spirit, one of the treasured legacies of the Western civilization, has an everlasting appeal to mankind with its noble and sublime characters. Its glory has long become a past, its spirit, however, has been condensed as a sort of 'collective unconsciousness' and sunk into the blood of the Europeans. Shakespeare, the talented dramatist, who worshipped it deeply, embodied it in his works with thorough going understanding and proud passion, and his Julius Caesar offers a perfect expression to it through the characterization of Caesar, Brutus and Antony. And there characters, partly friends and partly foes, have staged an awe inspiring political philosophical historical tragedy.
