Hunan Talents and the Propagation of Democratic Revolutionary Thoughts in the Early 20th Century

辛亥革命前夕,湖南的精英分子纷纷出国留学,学习西方革命思想,创办宣传革命的报纸、刊物、出版社,写作宣传革命的通俗读物,建立革命团体,进行各种革命活动,从而在湖南兴起了一个声势巨大的民主革命思潮.他们强调,只有革命,才能推翻满清封建王朝,才能振兴中国;特别在行动上,他们积极投入革命运动,勇于牺牲.因此,湖南成为全国革命风气最浓、影响也最大的一省.

On the eve of Xinhai revolution,Hunan talents went abroad in succession to study western revolutionary ideas.Back home,they established publishing houses ,printed newspapers and magazines, wrote popular articles to spread revolutionary thoughts and set up revolutionary organizations.By carring out various revolutionary activities,they sprang up a vigorous ideological trend of democratic revolution.In theory,they insisted that revolution is the only effective way to overthow Qing Dynasty and rejuvenate China;in practice,they took an active part in revolutionary activities without caring about their own lives.For their efforts,Hunan became one of the most revolutionary and influencial provinces all over the country in the early 20th century.
