本文借鉴希利斯·米勒的重复模式理论,通过哈代小说《苔丝》中出现频率较高且贯穿始终的“红色”意象分析文中的三个生—死—生循环。指出所有这些红色的东西都是哈代称为“无所不在的意志”(某种具有创造性和毁灭性的能量)所留下的循环痕迹。对一些学者认为哈代接受了叔本华的悲观主义哲学,认为人是无助的可怜生命的观点提出了不同的看法,阐明哈代是一位热爱自然、热爱生命、追求生命价值的作家。
