Behind Mt. Cangshan in Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, is the birthplace of the ancient Nanzhao Kingdom in the territory of today's Weishan, Nanjian and Midu counties. The ancient city of Weishan was built in the early Ming Dynasty. After some 600 years, the layout of the ancient city remains relatively intact. So, Weishan County seat deserves to be one of the historically and culturally famous cities in China. Weishan's rice-flour noodles with well-stewed pork and Nanjian's oily bean jelly are local snacks with ethnic flavor. The folk song and huadeng (festive lantern) dance popular in Midu area are of long-standing and win universal praise.
