流传在西北地区民间的脸谱,有社火脸谱、戏剧脸谱、跳神傩舞脸谱等.这些脸谱图样尺寸大小不一,有巴掌大小的,有一尺左右的,也有二尺以上的.梁山一百单八将脸谱图,是民间塑刻社火面具时,采用的标准设计图样,它一般长约35厘米,高55厘米以上.这些脸谱纹样具有表达人物外貌、性格、品格、身份特征的指向,其勾划、涂色等都有固定的格式.
The masks of the 108 generals of the Liangshan Mountain Rebellion characterized by bright color and simple contour enjoy great popularity in northwestern China. This form of art has its particularities in portraying a character's appearance, disposition and identity feature and is well- received by local people. They also serve as the material witness in the study of the Chinese cultural tradition, the primitive totem of an ethnic group and the ancient folklore. So, they are hailed as the divine face with human character and the living fossils of the masks of the Chinese Opera .
