灵隐寺是杭州西湖风景区最著名的一个佛教古刹,它在浙江佛教发展史和杭州旅游业等领域的重要性与日俱增。然而它在清末民初的兴衰历史在中文史料中记载并不完整。本文试图从一些相关的西文资料中寻找线索,力求用外国人记录的文字和图像材料来复原灵隐寺在那一时期的真实场景和人们对于灵隐寺的历史记忆。本文所关注的两个焦点分别是灵隐寺已经消失的山门和大雄宝殿内如来佛像格局的变迁。
