伊格尔顿是后巴赫金时代文化研究的主要代表,他的文化政治学一方面接续英国新左派(如威廉斯)传统,另一方面也受到巴赫金"维捷布斯克时期"思想的影响。但他根深蒂固的"政治情结"以及标新立异的学术个性,使这种接续与影响具有很强的"为我所用"的特点。伊格尔顿通过有意识地误读或过度阐释,把巴赫金富有深切人文关怀的政治美学转变为观念性极强的知识架构,使之成为一种失却了现实介入精神的美学政治,沦为一种书斋型的学问。这很大程度上影响了他对马克思主义的理解与接受。
