Wang Yi's Theory on the Relationship between Language and Thinking

王易是二十世纪早期成绩卓著的修辞学家 ,是中国语言学界、修辞学界第一个深入探讨语言与思想、思维关系的学者。他认为语言与思想无必然之关系 :“言语非思想”、“思想非言语”。语言与抽象思维的关系 :语言是形成思想的工具 ,是思维过程的工具 ,是承载思想的容器 ,语言与思想不可分离。语言与形象思维的关系 :形象思维有时不需要凭借语言 ,语言与思想有先后之别 。

Wang Yi was an outstanding rhetorician in the early 20 th century in China.He was the first Chinese scholar who studied profoundly the relationship between language and thinking.In his opinion,there was not any necessary connection between the two:'language is not thinking' and 'thinking is not language'. The relationship between language and abstract thinking is that language is the tool in the formation of thought,in the process of thinking and is the container of thought.Language and thought cannot be separated.The relationship between language and thinking in images is that,sometimes,thinking in images does not depend on language;they don't appear at the same time and language is not a perfect tool.
