Causes of Slow Reading Speed with Chinese Learners of English

阅读速度过慢这一问题在我国英语学习者中普遍存在。它很大程度上制约了阅读量、阅读面的扩大 ,从而直接影响英语水平的提高。语言与文化知识不足及心智成熟欠缺导致的阅读障碍、不良的阅读习惯、阅读策略与技巧的缺乏、有失偏颇的教学方法是造成英语阅读速度过慢的主要原因。

Slow reading speed, a widely existing phenomenon with Chinese English learners, severely hinders them from reading extensively, thus affecting the improvement of their overall English proficiency. This paper analyses the causes of slow reading speed such as an inadequate knowledge of the target language and its culture, the immaturity of mentality, bad reading habits, lack of proper reading strategics and skills, and misleading language teaching approaches. Moreover, it presents pedagogical suggestions to deal with slow reading speed.
