Eugene O'Neill is the foremost American dramatist who wrote over fifty plays in his lifetime and won the Nobel Prize of literature in 1936. Beyond the Horizon is his first important long play. Author of this thesis analyzes the double themes of this play: the development of the plot and the exhibition of the characters set off pessimism as the haunting theme of the play; while the language of the protagonist and the arrangement of the final scene imply the poetic optimism in the playwright' s deep thoughts.
