The Y-type penstock of zhonshanbao Hydropower Station is branched from level section of penstock six of Tianshengqiao Hydropower Station II, the HD of the branch is 1 540 m 2. Its structure is complicated. The branch penstock is made of high strength steel like NK-HITEN780A-Z35 and NK-HITEN690B that have less been applied in hydropower engineering practice of China. The writers put the main attention to introduce the layout of the Y-type penstock, structure analysis, and welding requirement of examining without damage. Now Zhonshanbao Hydropower Station is normally operated, this is the third successful example that the steel with strength of 80kg/mm 2 applied in hydropower engineering of China.
