藏獒,又叫护羊犬,是青藏高原一种独特的食肉犬类动物,生活在海拔3500米以上的高寒牧区,在自然环境的影响和藏民族的长期培育下,它成为犬类中的佼佼者.藏獒也是世界上最古老的犬种之一,有着数千年的育成历史,但其进化育成过程据说"像喜玛拉雅山的山峰一样,被遮挡在层层云雾之中,神秘玄奥",如今已杳不可考.在我国有关机构登记的46个犬品种中,只有藏獒和沙皮狗被有关国际组织认定为"中国独特的犬品种".
