根据全国第3次水能资源普查成果,并考虑到近20年来河流规划及水电站勘测设计的最新进展,初步统计,湖北省可开发水能资源,500 kW以上水电站装机容量共3 100.59万kW,年均发电量1331.2亿kW·h,居全国第4位.湖北省先后建成了丹江口、葛洲坝、隔河岩等大型水利水电工程,以及一大批中小型水电站,举世瞩目、规模巨大的长江三峡工程也正在施工.到1999年底止,500 kW以上水电站装机容量646.17万kW,占可开发水能资源3 100.59万kW的20.84%.预计到2010年,湖北省水电装机容量可超过2 683万kW,水能资源开发程度可达86.5%以上.从此,湖北省将由水患大省变成为一个引人瞩目的水利、水电大省.
