木版年画起源于春节贴在门上的"桃符",桃符是年画的艺术雏形,历史久远。它伴随着雕版技术的产生兴于宋,盛于明清,是中国传统绘画中最具民间特色的艺术形式。朱仙镇木版年画和桃花坞木版年画有着相同的历史渊源,但由于它们所处的地理环境、人文环境以及历史境遇的不同,所呈现出来的风格面貌有着很大的差异。通过比较研究它们的历史沿革及风格差异,使我们更好的继承民族文化遗产,提高创新能力,增强民族自信心,为艺术创作和艺术设计提供新的活力。
