委婉表达的核心特征是替代,即用委婉表达替代直言表达。替代之所以可能是因为两种表达式所指称的概念或范畴之间发生了外延内涵的传承。委婉表达的生成在一定程度上与意向性的指向作用有关。委婉表达是用一种心理感受替代另一种心理感受,从而实现'委婉'的目的。
