This paper presents Chestermans translation norms, which epitomize the current development of the field, in such a way that their difference with other scholars norm theories as well as their theoretical provenance can be brought to light. The paper holds that Chestermans norm theory, with its embracing of philological and sociological concepts and a wide coverage of social, ethical and technical norms involved in translation process, shows its transcendence of traditional translation concepts and thus can serve as a guideline for both the theory and practice of translation. The paper concludes by arguing for the feasibility and necessity of the study of translation norms.
