中国古代史家对史学本体问题的探讨,积累了相当厚重的理论遗产。在中国古代史学本体论的内涵中,史学"求真"和"寓义"是两个最基本的要素。然而从先秦至清代史家对于史学本体的认识在不同程度上都存在着偏颇,一个时期过度强调史学本体的"求真"理念,另一个时期则过分强调史学本体的"寓义"理念,导致史学思潮在征实与空疏之间畸轻畸重循环发展,给史学造成严重损失。因此,很有必要深入考察古代史家对"史义"认识的成败得失、经验教训,站在今天的认识高度借鉴和吸收,丰富和滋养当代史学理论。
