Namco, which means "heavenly lake" in Tibetan, together with the Mapam Yumco and Yamzho Yumco lakes are regarded as the three largest holy lakes in Tibet. According to Tibetan custom, the local people circle around lakes in the Year of the Sheep. The sacred Namco Lake attracts numerous worshippers to circle clockwise every 12 years.
