Most of the mountain tunnels in China have been built using half-surrounded construction method. In recent years, the destructive effects of these tunnels on ecological environment become more and more serious. With growing focuses on environmental issues and long term consideration of environmental protection, the full-surrounded construction is applied in some places, where the groundwater is sensitive or where settlement occurs under important buildings due to long time inefficient drainage. This paper introduces the application of half and full surrounded tunnels on Harbin-Dalian Passenger Dedicated Line and analyzes the comparison between the two patterns, which may provide some useful references for the design of mountain tunnels with 'full-sealing and drainage free'.
