The Awakening is a story about a woman named Edna who grew out of the traditional sex role and social code as a submissive wife into an independent woman with strong self-awareness. A detailed analysis is made for the process of the resurgence of Edna's self-awareness and her struggles for independence and freedom. Edna's suicide as a final result is not a sign of compromise to the male-centered society but a form of rebellion and silent resistance to the patriarchal world and a defense to the awakening self-awareness. The limitations of Edna's self-awareness are emphasized and concluded that women's liberation is not only the business of one woman, but also that of the whole humanity.
