This study was conducted to investigate the effects of asparagine(ASN) on growth performance, blood cell differential count and blood biochemical indices of weaner pigs challenged with lipopolysaccharide(LPS).Twenty-four weaner piglets(Duroc×Landrace×Large) were randomly allocated into 4 groups with 6 replicates and 1 piglet per replicate. The four groups included control group(basal diet),LPS group(basal diet+LPS),0.5%ASN group(basal diet+LPS+0.5%ASN) and 1.0%ASN group(basal diet+LPS+1.0%ASN).On day 16,the piglets in the LPS group,0.5%ASN group and 1.0%ASN group were injected intraperitoneally with 100 μg/kg BW LPS,and the piglets in the control group were injected intraperitoneally with the same dose of physiological saline. The results showed as follows: 1) 0.5%ASN group significantly alleviated the decrease of average daily gain(ADG) induced by LPS(P<0.05).2) At 4 h,0.5%ASN group significantly increased the percentage of lymphocytes and monocytes(P<0.05),and 1.0%ASN group significantly alleviated the increase of eosinophilic granulocyte percentage and the decrease of platelet number induced by LPS(P<0.05).At 24 h,0.5%ASN alleviated the decrease of red blood cell number and hematokrit induced by LPS(P<0.05).1.0%ASN group significantly alleviated the increase of the number of white blood cell and neutrophili induced by LPS(P<0.05),also significantly alleviated the decrease of lymphocyte number and percentage, hemoglobin content and hematocrit induced by LPS(P<0.05).3) At 24 h,0.5%ASN group significantly alleviated the increase of glutamic oxalacetic transaminase(GOT) activity and the decrease of blood glucose content induced by LPS(P<0.05).1.0%ASN group significantly alleviated the increase of GOT and the decrease of glutamic-pyruvic transaminase(GPT)/GOT value induced by LPS(P<0.05),significantly increased the total protein content, and decreased the alkaline phosphatase activity(P<0.05).In conclusion,ASN can alleviate the growth depression and stress response induced by LPS to some degree.
